Acupuncture is a Chinese medical therapy, where hair-thin like, solid, metallic needles are inserted through the skin to strategic points of the body. It’s used to help treat a range of conditions such as lower back pain and osteoarthritis.
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that our body is governed by Qi (or chi), responsible for the overall balance of energy flow or life force. However, Qi is more than an energy flow; it is divided into two central systems:
1. Physical – which defines the body’s water, air and food intake.
2. Substantial – the energy and vital fluids that run through the body
Chinese medical practitioners believe that acupuncture can help ease blockages of the energy pathway within the body that cause illnesses and diseases, and enable a rebalance of vital flow and energy and healing to pains.
Despite differing opinions from contrasting countries’ beliefs, acupuncture remains an effective medical remedy for a range of health condititions. Modern Western Medicine stands in the knowledge that the acupuncture technique stimulates nerves, connective tissues and muscles to boost the body’s natural healing process.
American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians in 2007 suggest that health practitioners should consider acupuncture as a treatment to patients with chronic lower who refrain from complying with home medication and care.
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common types of arthritis. Acupuncture can aid in reducing Osteoarthritis related-pain. Based on Mehcatie (2006) report, it was suggested that acupuncture treatments decrease discomfort from Osteoarthritis, specifically in the knees after three months of consistent therapy.
It has been well documented that acupuncture can help diminish headaches and migraines. Based on a study by Brinkhaus et al. (2016), acupuncture may appear more effective than taking prophylactic drug treatment with lesser side effects. Researchers have recommended acupuncture as a treatment option for patients comfortable with acupuncture for headache and migraines.
Over the years, scientists and health practitioners have paved over the knowledge of acupuncture as a medical treatment for illnesses in the areas of digestive, neurological, emotional, musculoskeletal, and gynecological.

I’ve been involved with Healthstin for approx 8 months now. I am very impressed with everybody I have worked with over that period. Many years ago, I swore I would never enter a gym again. I was wrong! All the exercise physiologists are eager and extremely knowledgeable, very helpful. They have quickly assessed my capabilities and present me with exercises and routines that are both fun and challenging, and really make a difference to my general health and wellbeing. My balance has improved, but I can also feel my body strength improving, and I have a lot more energy. It’s obvious the staff all enjoy what they do. I’m convinced they are the best in the business.Posted on Google![]()

The Exercise Physiologists at Healthstin have been wonderful in helping with my knee replacement physio. I attend the group sessions, however as the classes are not huge, you still receive one on one help. The staff are very friendly and easy going. I always enjoy my time in the pool doing my exercises.Posted on Google![]()

Acupuncture is a treatment that uses very fine needles placed at certain points on your body. People often try it to help with pain, reduce muscle tension, and improve their overall wellbeing.
Most people hardly feel any pain during acupuncture. The needles are very thin, so you might just notice a slight sensation when they go in. Many find the treatment relaxing.
Acupuncture can help with a variety of concerns, such as:
Your practitioner will adjust the treatment to your specific needs.
Everyone responds to acupuncture in their own way. Your practitioner will assess your needs and recommend a plan that fits you.
Acupuncture is usually safe when done by a qualified practitioner. The needles are always sterile and are used only once to keep things hygienic.
Most acupuncture sessions take about 30 to 60 minutes. Before starting, your practitioner will first discuss your symptoms with you and the treatment itself.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing so your arms, legs, or shoulders are easy to reach. This also makes your treatment more comfortable.
After treatment, some people feel relaxed or notice less tension. Others might feel a bit tired for a short whilst as their body adjusts.
Yes, you can often combine acupuncture with other therapies like:
Your practitioner can talk with you about the best approach for your health needs.
