A spinal cord injury can significantly impact mobility, function, and overall quality of life. The extent of impairment depends on the spinal cord injury levels, which determine how much movement and sensation are preserved below the affected area.
Whether you are adjusting to a recent injury or seeking to enhance long-term mobility, structured exercise therapy plays a vital role in rehabilitation and recovery.
We understand the physical and emotional challenges
that come with spinal cord injuries. That’s why we create a supportive and motivating environment to help you regain strength, mobility, and confidence. No matter where you
fall within the spinal cord injury levels, we are committed
to helping you achieve the highest level of independence possible.
Targeted strength training helps maintain and improve muscular function above and below the level of injury, supporting better physical performance and endurance.
Therapeutic exercises focus on maintaining joint flexibility and promoting functional movement to maximise independence in mobility.
Stretching and passive range-of-motion activities help manage muscle tightness and reduce spasms, improving comfort and control.
Aerobic conditioning and breathing exercises enhance heart and lung function, which can be affected following a spinal cord injury.
Helps with transfers, standing, or walking.
Regular physical activity supports mood regulation, reduces symptoms of depression or anxiety, and enhances overall quality of life.
Exercises tailored to build strength in unaffected muscle groups and preserve function in partially affected areas, supporting overall mobility and independence.
Gentle, guided movements help maintain joint flexibility, reduce stiffness, and prevent contractures.
Activities designed to improve bed mobility, transfers, wheelchair skills, and safe movement strategies in daily tasks.
Modified aerobic exercises, such as arm cycling or aquatic workouts, promote heart health and improve stamina.
Water-based therapy provides buoyancy and resistance, allowing safe, low-impact movement that supports strength and relaxation.
Customised programmes using adaptive equipment or seated routines to enable safe participation regardless of injury level.
Exercise plays a key role in maintaining health after an SCI. Our Exercise Physiologists focus on neuroplasticity and functional training to help you maximise remaining motor function. We design programmes to improve upper-body strength, core stability, and cardiovascular health, which support independence in daily tasks like transfers and wheelchair propulsion.
Regular, supervised physical activity is an effective way to manage common secondary issues associated with SCI, such as pressure sores, respiratory infections, cardiovascular disease, and bone density loss. We monitor your physiological responses to support an intensity that is both safe and aligned with your clinical needs.
Hydrotherapy is a great tool for spinal cord injuries. Because the water holds you up, you can do movements that might be too hard to do on solid ground. It helps relax tight or jerky muscles, keeps your blood flowing well, and gives you a safe place to practice your balance and core strength without the fear of falling. Our pools feature hoist access to support safe entry and exit for all mobility levels.
Our clinics are equipped with professional assistive technology and adaptive exercise equipment utilised for neurological rehabilitation. This includes dedicated strength machines and accessible cardiovascular equipment that allow for participation even for those with limited grip or trunk stability.
Most of our SCI participants access our services through the NDIS under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living or Improved Health and Wellbeing. We provide the detailed clinical reporting and progress tracking required by the NDIS to support your funding and long-term independence.
Our clinicians are university-qualified and trained to work with all levels of spinal cord injury. Whether you have an incomplete or complete injury, we individualise the intervention to your specific level of function, focusing on optimising the muscle groups you can control and maintaining the health of those you cannot.
While we offer Home Visits for functional assessments, our clinics provide access to dedicated clinical equipment and climate-controlled environments (important for temperature regulation issues). Our Hydrotherapy pools and adaptive equipment are key resources for a comprehensive neuro-rehabilitation programme.
Whether you’re dealing with pain, mobility issues, falls, or recovery, let us take the guesswork out. One of our experts will match you with the right service — at the right location and with the right funding — in under 10 minutes.
