Summary

The exercise physiology initial consultation expectations center on a comprehensive, patient-centered assessment by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). An AEP is an allied health professional who uses clinical exercise to aid recovery from various conditions and disabilities. The consultation begins with a detailed review of your medical and health history.

Next, the AEP conducts functional and movement assessments (testing range of motion, strength, and balance) to establish a baseline of your physical capacity. The final, crucial step involves a discussion of the findings and collaborative goal-setting (both short- and long-term). This thorough process ensures the AEP designs a safe, effective, and fully personalised exercise program tailored precisely to your specific needs.

Exercise Physiologist initial consultation

Before we take a deep look into what to expect during an exercise physiologist initial consultation, we must first understand what an exercise physiologist is and what they actually do to help you.

An exercise physiologist is an allied health professional that provides the highest level of clinical exercise intervention for effective rehabilitation and recovery. Healthstin NDIS Exercise Physiology in Melton delivers the most appropriate and safe exercises for people suffering from acute and chronic conditions injuries and disabilities.

However, before we personalise your plan, we conduct an exercise physiology assessment to gauge your previous and current physical capabilities, understand your health and medical history, perform functional assessments to understand baseline capacity and goal setting. This information helps your accredited exercise physiologist to implement a program suitable for your specific capacity and needs.

But what is an Exercise Physiologist, and what makes them credible in delivering health and well-being exercise programs?

Exercise Physiologist initial consultation

Your Exercise Physiologist

Your exercise physiologist will guide you in your own personalised exercise and movement program. An exercise physiologist is equipped with a high level of know-how when it comes to bodily functions and biomechanical changes to conduct exercise programs for improving functional capacity. It includes the following responsibilities:

  • Functional Capacity Assessments
  • Exercise Prescription
  • Progression and Regressions of Exercises
  • Adapting to changes in health, lifestyle and fitness
  • Re-assessments
  • Writing reports and;
  • On-going support and monitoring to ensure you are tracking towards your goals.

At Healthstin Melton clinic we ensure that our practitioners receive extensive training and ongoing mentoring and support from our Allied Health Coordinator, Dr Rachelle Sultana. An accredited exercise physiologist also will undergo continuing professional development and recognition under a code of ethics – Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Why might you need to see an Exercise Physiologist?

Anybody can see an Exercise Physiologist, to develop and improve your health and well-being. It can also be due to:

  • Remedying Chronic or Acute Pain
  • Diabetes treatment and management
  • Cardiovascular (high blood pressure, cholesterol. etc.) and pulmonary disease (asthma, COPD, etc.) rehabilitation
  • Neurological Conditions (Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, etc.)
  • Physical and sensory disabilities (Amputation, Autism Spectrum Disorder)
  • Intellectual Disabilities
  • Cancer
  • Depression and other mental health conditions
  • Musculoskeletal Conditions (arthritis, osteoporosis, pre/post-surgery rehabilitation)
  • Sport performance and conditioning

Or you just want to get some pointers on how to exercise correctly. Our exercise physiologists can also assist you with the following:

  • Methods for preventing injury
  • Evaluation of functional capacity
  • Education and advice on lifestyle and behaviour modification
  • Improving strength, endurance, and fitness.

Receiving services of an exercise physiologist provides several advantages for your health and well-being. So, whether you are experiencing a severe form of physical disability, or you are just trying to have a healthier lifestyle, we got you covered.

Once you understand why you need to see an exercise physiologist, it is time to book in for an initial consultation.

Gauging Your Physical Capacities during Exercise Physiologist initial consultation

Exercise Physiology Initial Consultation Process

An initial assessment should be conducted to suit your health and well-being needs. However, each assessment may differ depending on the reason why a patient seeks the services of an exercise physiologist, this is our patient-centered care approach. The following is what you should expect when you come in for your first appointment:

Medical and Health History

These are standard conversations to understand your capability and suitability to undergo physical functional assessments. It also helps to shape what changes you would like to make in your health and wellbeing.

Gauging Your Physical Capacities

We will conduct functional and movement assessments to better understand your physical capacity. It may involve Range of Motion (ROM), strength, endurance and balance testing to understand any deficiencies with your movement, which movement may be causing you pain and can help you determine your movement goals.

It also helps us to identify a baseline level of your functional capacity. If you are concerned about this part then don’t worry, the exercise physiologist will choose appropriate assessments suited to your physical capacity. During this, the exercise physiologist will also take notes on how you go to better prescribe your exercise program.

Discussion of Findings and Setting of Goals

Once everything is achieved during your initial consultation, the exercise physiologist will discuss their findings and plan with you to improve your health and well-being. This is an opportunity to really tell us how we can help you achieve your goals (both short and long-term are encouraged!)

You will then be provided with a clear plan of action for your treatment and establish goals for whatever it might be that you want to work on.

Your Exercise Physiologist is different from your Physiotherapist

Exercise-based therapies are the main emphasis of exercise physiology in a clinic, gym, or hydrotherapy setting to enhance the health and functionality of the affected areas.

Exercise programs are carried out under supervision to ensure proper performance and technique and to provide the desired results. Acute, early-stage assessment and hands-on treatment may be offered by physiotherapy to reduce pain and restore function.

Together, physiotherapists and exercise physiologists manage your conditions from the acute stage to functional strengthening, allowing you to resume work, sport, and your regular activities without risk.

At Healthstin, we are on a mission to improve your every functional capacity so you can enjoy life to the fullest, hence we are guaranteed to employ the best exercise physiologist to help people who are suffering from any form of disability. If you are in need of an exercise physiologist in Melton, give us a call on 1300 090 931 or email us on [email protected].

P.S.

We’re so excited to share with you our latest offer: a Free 30-minute consultation, exclusive for NDIS participants.
