According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), 1 in 6 Aussies reported having back problems in 2020–21, and musculoskeletal conditions remain a leading cause of disability and pain in the country. As a key treatment approach, Physiotherapy plays a vital role in helping Australians recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and improve their quality of life.

Whether you’re an NDIS Participant, a tradie with a work-related injury, or someone looking to regain movement after surgery, your first Physiotherapy session can be the start of lasting recovery and better mobility.

At Healthstin, we’re committed to providing patient-centred, evidence-based care tailored to your unique needs. Here’s what to expect from your first Physiotherapy session and how we make your experience as supportive and effective as possible.

Starting your better health and movement journey with Physiotherapy

Taking the first step towards better mobility and health can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Here at Healthstin, we believe that Physiotherapy should be more than just treatment. To us, it should be a journey shaped around your goals, your lifestyle, and your unique story.

If you’re wondering if Physio is for you, we’ll explain how Physiotherapy works in this post. Physiotherapy uses a combination of movement science, hands-on treatment, and education to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore function. It’s grounded in evidence-based practice and tailored to each person’s condition and goals.

At Healthstin, your Physiotherapist will assess how your body moves, identify any imbalances or limitations, and guide you through exercises and techniques that promote healing. This may include strength training, stretching, manual therapy, posture correction, or tailored home programmes.

Whether it’s for rehabilitation, chronic condition management, or injury prevention, physiotherapy empowers you to move better and live better.

Why choose Your First Physiotherapy Session at Healthstin?

Healthstin isn’t just an NDIS Physiotherapy Provider – we’re your partner in movement and wellness. Our team of expert and well-experienced Allied Health Physiotherapy professionals offers compassionate care with a focus on personalised physio care, functional outcomes, and building long-term confidence in your movement.

Whether it’s your first appointment or you’re transitioning from another service or provider, we’ll make sure that you feel welcomed, heard, and supported every step of the way.

Before your first appointment at Healthstin: The Essential 4-Step Checklist

Feeling unsure about what to bring or wear? Here are a few tips for your physio session preparation:

  • CLOTHING – Wear comfortable, loose-fitting attire that allows free movement and access to the area being assessed.
  • MEDICAL INFORMATION – Bring any relevant scans, referral letters, or medical history documents.
  • NDIS OR AGED CARE PLAN – If you’re accessing services via a funding program, bring your plan details or participant number.

Being prepared helps ensure your initial physio assessment goes smoothly and maximises your time with your Physiotherapist.

What to Expect from your First Healthstin Physiotherapy Session

Step 1:

Personalised Consultation & Medical History Review

At the start of your first visit, your Physiotherapist will take time to understand your condition, symptoms, and concerns.

This personalised Physio care approach includes a thorough discussion about:Your medical historyDaily routines, hobbies, and occupationPast injuries or surgeriesCurrent pain or mobility limitationsThis step sets the foundation for a treatment path that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.

Step 2:

Full Physical Assessment

Next comes a hands-on initial Physio assessment to evaluate how your body moves and functions.

This may involve checking your:

  • Range of motion
  • Muscle strength and flexibility
  • Posture and gait
  • Joint mobility
  • Neurological signs (if applicable)

For clients seeking Physiotherapy for injury recovery, this stage helps pinpoint the underlying issues behind pain or movement restrictions.

Step 3:

Diagnosis & Explanation

Your Physio will then explain their findings in a clear, jargon-free way. At Healthstin, we believe that understanding how Physiotherapy works is empowering. We take time to answer your questions, discuss your condition, and explain the treatment process ahead.

If you’re under an NDIS Physiotherapy Provider arrangement, we’ll also guide you on how your goals tie into your NDIS plan.

Step 4:

Your Tailored Treatment Plan

Together, you and your Physio will create a physio treatment plan designed specifically for your needs.

This may include:

  • Exercise-based therapy: Targeted movements and strength-building exercises
  • Manual therapy
  • Postural education
  • Pain management strategies
  • Home exercise programmes

Most importantly, we include Physiotherapy goal setting as part of this step. Whether your goal is to walk independently, return to work, or simply manage pain better, we align every part of your treatment to support that goal.

After your session: What happens next?

Following your first appointment, your Physiotherapist will:

  • Provide written or visual exercise instructions
  • Recommend the frequency of follow-up sessions
  • Discuss progress tracking methods
  • Coordinate with other Allied Health professionals if needed such as Exercise Physiologists or Dietitians

You may feel some soreness after your first session. This is normal, especially if you’ve started exercise-based therapy. Remember, Physiotherapy is a journey, and recovery takes time, consistency, and teamwork.

We answer the most frequently asked questions from new patients

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on your condition, goals, and funding. Your Physiotherapist will give you a recommended plan based on your needs.

Is Physiotherapy covered under the NDIS?

Yes, if you have a current NDIS plan and Physiotherapy is part of your supports. Healthstin is a registered NDIS Physiotherapy Provider, and we can help navigate your plan.

Can Physiotherapy be included in aged care services?

Yes, Physiotherapy can be included under aged care support plans. both in residential aged care and for those receiving Home Care Packages (HCPs). At Healthstin, our Physiotherapists work closely with older adults to help improve balance, strength, mobility, and independence. If you’re receiving government-funded aged care, talk to your Provider or case manager about including Physiotherapy in your care plan.

Will I get exercises to do at home?

Absolutely. Exercise-based therapy often includes home programmes tailored to your progress and abilities.

What if I can’t do the exercises?

People often fear they won’t be “fit enough” or physically able to participate. Our patient-centred approach means our Physiotherapist will adapt everything to your current abilities, regardless of your age, condition, or mobility.

Will it be painful?

Many new patients worry that Physiotherapy will hurt. This is understandable since they’re already in pain, and some will seek Physiotherapy for injury recovery. Whilst some treatments may involve some degree of discomfort such as deep tissue mobilisation or new exercises, our experienced Physiotherapists will always work within your comfort level and explain what’s happening.

Can I bring someone with me to the appointment?

Yes, support people, carers, or family members are always welcome, especially for first visits.
